Nina Hartley's Guide to Erotic Bondage starts like an infomercial, but it doesn't stay that way for very long. The bulk of the movie has a very instructional feel to it. It begins with Nina and Carmen Luvana sitting on a leather couch and facing the viewer. The scripted nature of the opening is a little too obvious, it's a little bit distracting at first, but I was able to get beyond the presentation because the information presented was really good. The emphasis on trust, consent, communication, safety and clarity of desire was very reassuring. Nina Hartley presents a lot of good information and presents it in a non-judgmental way with an agenda that emphasizes trust and safety. It strikes me as an excellent primer for people interested in bondage who have a lot of questions about what it's about and how to do it. This theme continues into Nina Hartley's sex scene with Randy Spears, but by the time we get to Carmen's scene with Tommy Gunn it's more about the sex than the instruction.
The first sex scene involves Nina and Randy Spears. It's used as an example of what you should do when practicing bondage with someone. There's some setup with the beginning defining the parameters of the scene before Randy is bound and starts servicing Nina. The two of them have really good chemistry during the scene, they really seem to genuinely enjoy fucking each other. Nina is extremely responsive giving specific feedback and convincingly moans and growls in response to what Randy is doing. This is a lot more sexy to me then the typical squealing and panting you get in most scenes. The presentation of anal sex as not just something that happens but something you have to do some prep for was nicely informative, and they make the preparation while Randy teases her ass fun to watch. All in all the scene balances good instruction with being very very hot and is really an exceptional scene to watch.
Nina's scene is followed by a scene between Carmen Luvana and Tommy Gunn. Carmen prepares for the scene by putting on some wrist restraints and adjusting her latex skirt to show off her pussy. This scene has Carmen being bound and involves a different variety of restraints and less of an instructional dynamic than the scene between Nina and Randy. Carmen is teased more by Tommy than Randy was in his scene with Nina. There is some really great chemistry between her and Tommy Gunn, which helped to enhance my enjoyment of the scene. It's much more of a typical scene with some nice sucking and fucking, but as fun as it was it was definitely overshadowed by the Nina and Randy scene.
The movie ends the same place it began with Nina and Carmen. Nina recaps the main points of safety and communication. As far as the information goes, I'm not a bondage expert or even a practitioner. However, I have friends who are members of the BDSM community with whom I've discussed the topic in depth and the information presented is consistent with what I have heard from them. I'm also a fan of writer Violet Blue, who writes on topics like BDSM often, and the information presented definitely strikes me as consistent. I mention this because any instructional materials are really presenting the perspective of the presenter and aren't usually very objective. In something as taboo and potentially a bit dangerous as bondage consistency with other sources and a focus on trust, communication, and safety are very important.
There are two bonus scenes on the DVD. One with Kylie Ireland and Mickey G. and another with Shy Love, Mika Tan, and Alec Knight. The Kylie Ireland scene is very sexy. It starts with a lot of close ups, specifically close ups of Kylie's face as Mickey eats her pussy. It's shot in a somewhat artistic fashion and definitely worth a watch in addition to the main DVD content or just on its own. The threesome scene starts out kind of funny with Mika and Shy planning to surprise Alec with a threesome when he comes home early. There's good chemistry between the three of them and the scene get hot pretty quickly with Mika and Shy stripping and teasing Alec. The scene isn't filmed as artistically, but it's a good scene, plenty to enjoy in it and definitely a worthwhile addition to the DVD.
I recommend this DVD for anyone curious about bondage as there is a lot of good information and you can also see some really sexy examples of what they're talking about. Even if you're not interested in bondage the DVD has plenty of sexy scenes to offer. Nina Hartley may be just a touch older than most porn viewers are interested in, but it really shouldn't matter because her scenes are fantastically sexy. Her responsiveness, the way she sucks cock, and the way she fucks all have a really genuine feel to them and she seems to be truly enjoying herself. Carmen's scene isn't bad but Nina Hartley's skills in the first scene definitely overshadow her performance. The bonus scenes are a nice addition to the main feature. I give the movie five out of five kleenexes.
